Fake Plastic Trees? Blog #4

Radiohead had a song called Fake Plastic Trees, it came out when I was in high school.  Pretty good song.  This podcast is about Fake Trees.  Continuing our look into global warming, this podcast investigates a proposed solution to a human-caused environmental problem through mimicking a trees intake of carbon dioxide.

After listening to the podcast, react by answering the following questions.

What do you think of using fake trees to capture carbon dioxide?  What are some of the environmental impacts you foresee in using these fake trees? Finally, this idea is known as Biomimicry (click here for a Wiki link explanation)  If you could pick one element of nature and solve a human-caused problem or to better design anything, what would it be?  Example, using information and structures of a Gecko's feet to design a better Velcro adhesive!

I think it is awesome that such things are in the world what is even cooler is that they are using them to cut down on the CO2 in the air. Some good impacts I think the tress will have are the reducing the carbon dioxide if we could do that the ozone would stop growing and the ice caps would stop melting, giving polar bears along with other organisms the ability to live up in in the poles without worrying about food, homes being destroyed and so on. If I could choose something to change in the environment I would say it would be to create a machine that would let us reuse nuclear energy to and change it to say power our subs for another 20 years or so this way we won't have to keep throwing away the fuel and can keep reusing it for 60-100 years rather than just 20.

i think it is good idea. because if we extracting carbon dioxide from atmosphere we proposed to cool an overheated planet. and if we using fake trees we capable of pulling large amounts of CO2. also including producing the electricity needed to run them, the large land area the air capture devices would occupy, and the manufacture and installation of devices using resins, plastics, and other substances that could release air pollutants. we need protect our environment. because continuing of global warming we will die.. looks like thousand years ago dinosaur..
if we can decrease air pollution and carbon dioxin
if it cost is a lot we need artificial trees..
i think ;;;

I think that the making of "plastic trees" is a good idea. It is taking a step to make the planet more efficient. Also with real trees being cut down then something must be done to control the rise in carbon dioxide population. I think the main concern with these fake trees is that once the carbon dioxide has been captured, where will it be stored safely. Withe biomimicry on the rise, i think a good idea to invest in would be to create a solar panel that can capture the suns energy with the same efficiency as plants can. This would use direct energy from the sun and capture massive amounts of energy.

I think that its a good idea and a bad idea... The man talking was saying that it would cost up to trillions of dollars for a lot of fake tree that wont really give much of a dent in the Co2 out there.... i think that it was a good idea that they are pumping Co2 into the ground but they dont know the effects of that.... so i think that they should do labs on what will happen if Co2 is pumped in the ground before they put up tons and tons of fake trees... because it is so costly and its not that big of taking Co2 out of the air... but it helps which is good in way... i think that they should find a different way.... But the fake trees are a good start i think and that we should work of that...
And its bad because it cause to much money and it wont really help all that much.... we are already having trouble with money so why spend tons more on something that they dont know a lot about i think they should do more research and labs before anything else.

I agree with the fact that using artificial trees to trap Co2 is a good idea. Inventing such a way to capture carbon dioxide from the air is a intelligent invention. It mentioned that if the United States had enough room to store all of the artificial trees, then we could grab the carbon dioxide from the air anywhere in the world. Then the Carbon dioxide would safely be stored under the ground in which could be used for future use. Some scientists believe this process is called "medigration technique."

Biomimicry: There are organisms that live in the ocean called glo-fish. They have the ability to turn into neon colors depending on their environment. They are able to do this because of all the protein that they are able to suck up. A problem that some Americans face today is the fact that they have a hard time driving at night because their eyes do not adjust well to the darkness. Scientists could invent glasses or some type of tool such as glasses or something on a windshield of a car that could help the vision of a driver.

i think that its a great idea, but im still wondering why we dont dump some money into fusion energy....all we need is a big enough reactor, and we would have unlimited clean energy...we dont have the will to allocate enough resources however...

I think it is a good idea but we shouldn't rely solely on the artificial trees to save us, there is a lot more we can do than just these fake trees. They take space and they are an eye sore so i see those two points being an impact on the environment. I would use the concept of honey bee's they make what they need to live off while helping other plants by pollanation and that concept should be applied to the human population we make something we use by helping another thing or get energy without harming the environment.
